Otok Hvar - Sucuraj / Island of Hvar

Otok Hvar - Sucuraj / Island of Hvar

Otok Hvar - Sucuraj / Island of Hvar

Na samom istoku otoka Hvara nalazi se ribarsko mjesto Sucuraj, najvece i povijesno najbitnije naselje ovoga dijela otoka i ujedno sjedište opcine Sucuraj. Mjestom dominira crkva Sv.
_____________________________________

On the very east side of the island of Hvar, located is the fishing place Sucuraj, the largest and historically most significant settlement in this area of the island and also the centre of Sucuraj Municipality. The place is dominated by the church of St. George from the 1331 (razed and built again in the 19th century) from where Sucuraj got its name. Sucuraj is important also as a ferry link, it is very close to the mainland, in comparison for example to Stari Grad, so that even the ride is shorter. The most important cultural and historical buildings in Sucuraj are the remnants of the Augustinian monastery and the Venetian fortress, confirming Sucuraj’s volatile and rich history. Sucuraj numbers around 400 inhabitants, mostly involved in fishing, olive-groves and winemaking, and most recently tourism. This is contributed by a good position and nice ambient in which many gravel and sandy beaches are included, as well as many coves nearby. In this area of the Adriatic the sea is very rich in sardines and anchovies, so it is known far away that the Sucuraj locals are experts in processing and salting these fish.
