Otok Hvar - Vrboska / Island of Hvar

Otok Hvar - Vrboska / Island of Hvar

One of the nicest places on the island of Hvar is of course, Vrboska. It is situated at the end of a deeply recessed and narrow cove surrounded by a dense pine forest at the very edge of the fertile Stari Grad field. Special charm is given to the place due to its stone bridges that link the shorelines and the islet to the palms in the port itself. The place was founded in the 15th century when populated by the locals from neighbouring Vrbanj as their own port. The most important building is the picturesque Renaissance church of St. Mary from the 16th century, built in the shape of a fortress so as to protect against the Turks. It still remains today one of the nicest buildings of this type. Also, of great significance is the church of St. Lawrence from the 15th century, where valuable art paintings are kept. Vrboska, due to its beauty, is often called ‘little Venice’. Vrboska was once an important maritime and fishing place, witnessed today by the fishing museum. Today, in Vrboska there live around 500 inhabitants, and the main economic sector is dominated by tourism.
